In the Netherlands, strict rules apply to tinting and covering windscreens and front side windows of vehicles, including the use of chameleon window film. These rules are aimed at ensuring road safety by ensuring that the driver always has sufficient visibility of the road and that other road users are not hindered by reflections or darkening.

Current Legislation (2024):

  1. Windshields :

    • In the Netherlands it is not permitted to cover the windscreen of a vehicle with films, including chameleon window film, that reduce light transmission or affect visibility.
    • The windscreen must have a minimum light transmission of 75%, which means that any form of tinting or film treatment that reduces the light transmission below this limit is not permitted.
  2. Front Side Windows :

    • The side windows at the front of the vehicle (the windows next to the driver and front passenger) must have at least 70% light transmission.
    • Here too, any form of foil, including chameleon foil, that reduces the light transmission below this limit is prohibited.
  3. Rear Windows and Rear Side Windows :

    • For the rear windows and the rear side windows (behind the driver and front passenger) the rules are less strict. Here it is permitted to apply films that reduce light transmission, as long as there is sufficient visibility to the rear through the wing mirrors.

Enforcement and Consequences:

  • Failure to comply with these rules can result in fines and possibly a rejection of the vehicle during the MOT inspection. In addition, the police can impose a fine if they find that the windscreen or the front side windows do not meet the legal requirements.
  • For serious violations, the vehicle may even be taken off the road until the situation is resolved.

Conclusion:

The use of chameleon window film on the windshield and front side windows of vehicles is strictly regulated in the Netherlands and in most cases not permitted due to the strict requirements for light transmission. If you are considering applying chameleon film to your vehicle, it is important to only use it on the rear windows or to ensure that the film meets the legal requirements for light transmission. It is always advisable to contact a professional or local authorities for advice if in doubt.
